Alter Bridge - AB III

Gitarrist Mark Tremonti, Bassist Brian Marshall und Schlagzeuger Scott Philips - das sind drei Viertel von "Alter Bridge" - und auch von der Megaerfolgsband "Creed". Zusammen mit Frontmann Myles Kennedy erschien nun (trotz Wiedervereinigung mit "Creed"-Sänger Scott Stapp) das dritte Album des Alternativprojekts "Alter Bridge". 2004 nahmen sie das erste Album "One Day Remains" auf, das in den USA bald Goldstatus erlangte und drei Singles hervorbrachte. 2007 folgte das zweite Album "Blackbird" mit den Hitsingles "Rise Today" und "Watch Over You".

Entsprechend ist auch "AB III" kein Album der leisen Töne, sondern haut so richtig in die Fresse. Brachiale Gitarren und eine martialische Drum-Sction treffen auf einen melodischen Gesang mit tollen Hooklines. Mit "Life must go on" ist immerhin auch eine richtige Ballade dabei, alles in allem ist das Album mit weiteren Mid-Tempo-Nummern ziemlich ausgewogen - und hörenswert!

Diese Reise beginnt mit dem Albumopener "Slip To The Void". Das karg-düstere Intro bereitet die von Kennedy erzählte Geschichte vor. Tremonti fügt hinzu: "'Slip To The Void,' has one of my favorite vocal performances ever by Myles, the song is really creepy and lets the listener know the vibe of the record. It's pretty dark, the intro really sucks you in."

Nach diesem Start legt das Album eine andere Richtung ein und mit "Isolation" folgt ein metallischer Song, der gleichzeitig die erste Single ist und mit dem Alter Bridge beweisen, dass sie durchaus aggressive Songs schreiben können, ohne dabei ihre typische Melodieführung zu verlieren. Tremonti: "Melody is still the most important thing for us. There's no point in being heavy just for the sake of being heavy."

Von den bombastischen Riffs in "Still Remains" zum grüblerischen Lieblingssong der Band "Show Me A Sign", ist AB III ein Konzeptalbum, dessen Hauptfigur verzweifelt versucht, ihren Platz in einer Welt voller Zweifel und Leere zu finden. Der Song "Words Darker Than Their Wings" bildet das letzte Kapitel dieser Geschichte. Kennedy: "The lyric was inspired by a conversation I had with a good friend a while ago. It was the catalyst for the idea of having both Mark and I trade off on the lead vocal. I thought it would be a good way of making the differing points of view in the 'conversation' be more effective. More importantly, I thought Mark sounded great singing it!"

Obwohl AB III einem thematischen roten Faden folgt, gibt es Songs, die musikalisch wie textlich ausbrechen und ganz andere menschliche Gefühle behandeln. Einer dieser Momente ist sicherlich "Wonderful Life", ein Song, über den Kennedy folgendes sagt: "An extremely emotional song to put together, it took a long time." Und er fügt hinzu: "The lyric was inspired by the idea that there will come a day when we all must say goodbye to the ones we love and hold dear in our hearts. Basically, I asked myself what would I want to say in that final moment, that last goodbye?"

Die Band verpflichtete Produzent Michael "Elvis" Baskette (Iggy Pop, Incubus) um die Vison, die man für AB III hatte, entsprechend umzusetzen. Baskette, den Tremonti als "fünftes Bandmitglied" beschreibt, produzierte bereits den Vorgänger Blackbird. Kennedy sagt über Baskette: "Over the years we have definitely established a bond with Elvis. We trust his instincts, he knows how to bring out the best in us sonically and creatively."
